According to reports from Thailand, authorities in Kanchanaburi province have intercepted a large shipment of untaxed cigarettes transported from Myanmar's town of Phayathonezu.
The seizure occurred on March 25 when Thai officials inspected a vehicle at a checkpoint in Sangkhla Buri district, near the Phayathonezu border area. During the search, they discovered and confiscated the smuggled cigarettes.
The haul included 40 cartons of untaxed foreign cigarettes, 1,000 packs of cigarettes and 400 packs of CHAIYO-brand cigarettes.
Reports indicate the smugglers will likely face fines for violating Thai customs laws.
This follows a similar incident on February 27, when Thai authorities at the Nong Phak Checkpoint in Kanchanaburi found 1,240 untaxed cigarette cartons hidden in six brown parcels inside another vehicle.
Regional sources note that international goods frequently transit through Thailand before being smuggled into Myanmar via the Phayathonezu border crossing.
