Tensions rise between Thai military and UWSA over border camps

The Thai military has reportedly requested the United Wa State Army (UWSA) to remove its camps from nine locations along the Myanmar-Thai border by December 18, claiming the areas belong to Thailand.

However, the UWSA has rejected this demand, asserting that the territories are under its control, according to reports from Thai media on November 25.

Sources close to the UWSA revealed that tensions have escalated along the border near Myanmar's Mong Hsat Township and Thailand's Mae Hong Son Province.

The UWSA is said to have deployed heavy artillery, including Hong Hua cannons, in preparation to counter any potential confrontation with the Thai military.

The UWSA has also identified the positions of Thai troops, according to the source.

The Thai military reportedly demanded the removal of UWSA camps, including those at Doi Hua Ma and Naung Lyan, among five other locations.

However, the UWSA firmly refused, maintaining that the areas do not belong to Thailand.

Meanwhile, Thai forces, including Infantry Battalion No. 3, have reportedly prepared artillery reinforcements in the disputed regions.

UWSA spokesperson U Nyi Ran stated that the organization has reported the situation to the Myanmar government.

"Yes, it’s true that the Thai side demanded the removal of nine camps in the 171 region of southern Wa territory. This matter involves state-level discussions, not just us. We have already informed the state leadership. While the Thai side is increasing its forces, our position remains normal," U Nyi Ran said in a statement released by the Wa's Youth Voice Network.

The situation continues to unfold amid rising tensions and differing territorial claims along the Myanmar-Thai border.
