Parliamentary representatives need to act with their dignity intact in discussing constitutional amendment or risk a lawsuit if they are going too far, Union Parliament Speaker T Khun Myat has warned.

The speaker made the remark after two military MPs stood in opposition to Upper House MP Dr Pyae Phyo’ discussion of the provisions included in the bills amending the constitution for the second time during a session of the Union Parliament held in Nay Pyi Taw on February 27.

“I want to say that MPs should act with their own dignity in their discussion but without provocation. The discussion will continue tomorrow as well. I have already said this. As speaker, I have the authority to take action. If you are going too far, I could take action in accord with the law,” said Speaker T Khun Myat.

He called for unity among the parliamentarians and avoidance of any provocation despite different opinions.

“We have already said that only relevant parts of the bills must be discussed,” he added.

The bills amending the constitution for the second time have been under discussion in parliament for three days. A total of 149 MPs were allowed to discuss the bills, so far, 69 have made their discussions.
