Around 2,000 local residents form Thegon Township in Pyay District, Bago Region (Western), staged a mass rally on April 7 in support of constitutional amendment, a total end to sound of guns and national unity.

The rally started at 8 am and the participants went round the town chanting slogans.

"This is a rally participated by the people, not a single party. They do not like the whole constitution, not Section 59 (f) or Section 436 alone. They express their designer to amend the whole constitution (2008) after learning it. Rallies are held nationwide. We hold this rally as the stance of our town is the same. This is organized not by a party, but by the local people," said Ye Yint Phyo, a local resident from Thegon.

The demonstrators held vinyl posters reading "People support amending the undemocratic constitution; Ending sounds of guns nationwide; and National unity". They also chanted slogans such as "Establishment of a democratic federal union, and Down with the 2008 constitution that gives much support to the military.

"We are holding this rally to totally oppose the constitution as it is contrary to our desire," said another local resident from Thegon.
