Russia pledges support for Myanmar’s election preparations

The Chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) of Myanmar, U Ko Ko, met with H.E. Mr. Sholban Kara-Ool, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation’s State Duma, along with a Russian delegation, on December 3 at the UEC office in Naypyidaw. During the meeting, discussions included Russia’s commitment to assisting Myanmar in successfully organizing elections.

At the meeting, the UEC Chairman outlined ongoing collaborations with Russia's Central Election Commission under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). He provided updates on Myanmar's election preparations, highlighting measures in place to ensure a successful electoral process.

Deputy Chairman Sholban Kara-Ool shared insights into the structure and functions of the Russian State Duma and discussed areas where the two countries could cooperate further. He expressed Russia’s readiness to provide support for Myanmar’s election efforts. The Russian Ambassador to Myanmar also posed questions related to electoral matters, which the UEC Chairman addressed, fostering open and transparent discussions.

The meeting was attended by UEC members and officials from the commission’s office.

Additionally, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council and Prime Minister, met with Mr. Sholban Kara-Ool and the Russian delegation on December 3 at the State Administration Council office in Naypyidaw. Discussions emphasized the longstanding relationship and growing cooperation between Myanmar and Russia.

The dialogue covered a wide range of topics, including mutual support for political transitions in both countries, preparations for free and fair elections in Myanmar, and Russia's potential role in sending observers. Other areas of collaboration discussed included legal matters, cultural and religious exchanges, youth development, tourism, trade, agriculture, industrial production, and energy generation. Both sides expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
