Railway services disrupted due to bomb discovery on Yangon-Mawlamyine Line
Published 5 June 2024

On June 4, railway operations faced a halt as a  hand-made bomb was discovered along the Yangon-Mawlamyine line, as confirmed by the Information Team of the State Administration Council (SAC). The improvised explosive device was found concealed inside a plastic box near Mile-122/14, situated between Theinseik and Donwun stations, by a diligent railway worker.

Upon alerting the authorities, regional security forces swiftly intervened and successfully deactivated the bomb later in the afternoon. However, the disruption led to significant delays for numerous trains, including the No 81 Up passenger express, which remained halted for over three hours. Normalcy was restored on the Theinseik and Donwun railways line around 4:10 pm following the reopening of the affected stretch.

This incident adds to a concerning trend, with a total of 206 bombings targeting railways and stations since February 2021, along with 165 instances of sabotage on railway tracks and 42 arson attacks on railway infrastructure and staff housing.
