A total of 4,335 prisoners currently serving various sentences have been granted amnesty under Order No. 40/2026 issued by the Office of the President on April 17.

The amnesty was granted to mark the Myanmar New Year, with the aims of promoting public peace of mind, upholding humanitarian considerations, and enabling the released individuals to contribute to nation-building.

According to the order, the President exercised authority under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure to commute the remaining sentences of inmates held in prisons, detention centers, and labor camps across the country.

The release is subject to the condition that if any of the beneficiaries reoffend, they will be required to serve both the new sentence and the remainder of their original sentences.
