Although it has been agreed to appoint Mr Virasakdi Futrakul, former deputy foreign minister of Thailand, as ASEAN special representative to Myanmar, the plan could not go ahead due to additional new proposals, said Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, also chairman of the State Administration Council, made the remark during a speech to mark the six months of the SAC assuming State responsibilities on August 1.

He attended the Asean summit on April 24, and his council had done everything that should been done in relation to the five-point consensus approved by the meeting, the military chief said.

“Of the three to be chosen as ASEAN special envoy, it has been agreed to appoint former Thai deputy foreign minister Mr Virasakdi Futrakul. However, we cannot get ahead due to various reasons and new proposals. I want to say that we are ready to discuss and cooperate with ASEAN and act within the ASEAN framework when the ASEAN representative arrives in Myanmar,” the Senior General said.

He added that plans were underway for international representatives to witness the findings of the 2020 general election within days to come.
