From January to October, there were 13,487 traffic accidents nationwide with 4,387 deaths and 20,884 injuries, according to the Road Transport Administration Department.
Despite the decline in the number of traffic accidents and injuries, the number of traffic-related deaths increased by 90 compared with the same period last year.
Bago Region topped the list of the traffic-related injuries and accidents while Yangon Region stood first on the list of traffic related deaths.
There were 262 cases, 433 injuries and 178 deaths in Nay Pyi Taw, 368 cases, 463 injuries and 162 deaths in Kachin State, 74 cases, 93 injuries and 43 deaths in Kayah State, 322 cases, 533 injuries and 120 deaths in Kayin State, 93 cases, 97 injuries and 40 deaths in Chin State, 1,245 cases, 2,132 injuries and 387deaths in Sagaing Region, 501 cases, 797 injuries and 163 deaths in Taninthayi Region, 2,061 cases, 3332 injuries and 536 deaths in Bago Region, 1,217 cases, 2,160 injuries and 340 deaths in Magway Region, 1,591 cases, 2,308 injuries and 506 deaths in Mandalay Region, 705 cases, 1,104 injuries and 240 deaths in Mon State, 285 cases, 396 injuries and 126 deaths in Rakhine State, 1,945 cases, 2,213 injuries and 567 deaths in Yangon Region, 964 cases, 1,419 injuries and 520 deaths in Shan State and 1,383 cases, 2,518 injuries and 365 deaths in Ayeyawady Region. There were three accidents on railroad and three injuries.
There were 452 cases on Yangon-Mandalay Highway, with 870 injuries and 89 deaths. There were 16 cases, 13 injuries and five deaths on border.
According to the National Road Safety Council's (NRSC) report, the number of traffic accidents increased for ten consecutive years. In 2018, there was a slight decline in traffic accident.
Motorbike accident accounts for 49 per cent of the total accidents, resulting in 2,376 deaths and 12,985 injuries.
Due to lack of seat belt use , there were 6,276 injuries and 1,214 deaths in 2018.
