Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu then pressed a button to unveil the Mingalar Market signboard.
Construction of the new Mingalar Market began in 2018. Shops are now operating from the ground floor to the fourth floor, with a total of 4,067 shop units, according to reports.
“Construction of the new Mingalar Market began in 2018. Now that it has been completed, shop owners have already started selling their goods in the market over the past few days. There are a total of 4,067 shop units across five floors. Since the original Mingalar Market was first built, the shop units have measured five feet by five feet. The new market has been reconstructed according to the original floor arrangements and allocated land areas, with shop units reassigned according to their previous numbers. We have returned the original shop units to their respective owners in their designated locations,” said U Nyi Nyi Oo, Head of the Markets and Commodity Depots Department under the Yangon City Development Committee.
The new modern Mingalar Market features a car parking facility, banks, restaurants and shopping centres on the ground floor, as well as shop units and warehouses on the upper floors.
The former Mingalar Market suffered two major fires, in May 2010 and January 2016. The fires required prolonged firefighting operations involving large numbers of firefighters and fire engines and caused extensive damage and losses.
