A Myanmar seaman is reportedly missing after falling off from Northern Jaguar container ship near the New York harbour in United States on October 27.

The container ship is owned by from UNITEAM Marine from Myanmar.

The accident occurred near the Ambrose lighthouse at the entrance of New York harbour. It occurred when a ship door was opened for a navigator to enter. Waves lapped the ship and seawater entered in the ship. The water dragged the sailor overboard.

The ship informed about the accident to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the USCG sent a search and rescue ship but not a helicopter as the weather was bad for flying.

“The seamen opened a door located in the middle of the ship as the ship is too high for the navigator to climb. At that time, 20 feet height of wave stroke the ship while the wind speed was about 40 mph. Seawater entered in the ship and Bosun Moe Lwin was thrown inside. He had been hit with objects in the ship and his leg was broken. Another sailor, OS Kyaw Min Tun was pulled by the waves and fell off the ship. USCG contacted his family directly and informed about their search. We are still searching for him,” said an official from the UNITEAM Marine on October 29.

The container ship is running between Asia and America in trade routes. The UNITEAM Marine informed about the accident to Department of Marine Administration (DMA).
