Myanmar is cooperating with its friendly nations in an effort to produce Covid-19 vaccines domestically, said Major General Zaw Min Tun, leader of the information team of the State Administration Council (SAC) and deputy minister for information.

He revealed the information during a press conference of the SAC information team in Nay Pyi Taw on August 27.

The SAC and government are making their constant efforts for the people to get vaccinated. This month alone, 4 million vaccine doses were purchased from China and 2 more million doses were received as a donation from China. Two million have arrived in our country. Currently, 12 groups of priority are being vaccinated in respective regions and states. Four million doses will arrive this week. Moreover, we have planned to buy 24 million doses. We have a target to vaccinate half of our population and beyond this year. The government is trying for the people to get vaccinated as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, we are collaborating with our friendly nations to produce vaccines domestically, Maj-Gen Zaw Min Tun said.

Under the previous government, a sale contract was signed with India to purchase 30 million vaccine doses. Two million arrived and 1.5 million were received as a donation. And all of them had been used, he added.

With Covid-19 case surges, India is not able to send the remaining doses. Other countries are not receiving them either. Besides, 2 million vaccine doses from Russia will be arriving in batches this month, he said.
