The Mon Unity Party has refused the offer of Mon State Administration Council to send a representative to serve as a member of the Ye District Administration Council, citing security reasons.

“The state council offered us to serve as a member of the Ye district council. We called a meeting in the first week of August. But we couldn’t find anyone for the post mainly because of the security situation. Therefore, we had to refuse their proposal,” said Naing San Tin, secretary of the Mon Unity Party.

Previously, Mon State had only two districts—Mawlamyine and Thaton. On April 2022, the Ministry of Home Affairs added Ye and Kyaikhto districts.

Armed attacks have frequently occurred in Ye Township with a latest incident on August 3 in which an armed group named Ye Bilu entered the township immigration office and started shooting. Two immigration officials and one civilian were killed and another staff member wounded in the incident.

There was also a shooting in front of Ye Township Police Station on July 28, a shooting at Tadaphyu checkpoint, exit and entrance of Ye Township, on July 27, and another shooting on Ye-Chaungtaung river-crossing bridge on July 19, according to local sources.

After those incidents, authorities had tightened security and travel restrictions in Ye Township.
