Michael Kyaw Myint arrested for sedition

An ultranationalist, Michael Kyaw Myint, has been arrested following his Facebook post reading “A monument will be erected in Nay Pyi Taw calling on the patriotic Tatmadaw (military) to save the country in line with the constitutional provisions,” according to South Oakkalapa Township in Yangon Region. 

“We have heard that he was arrested in South Oakkalapa Township, not in our township,” said Dagon Myotthit (South) Township administrator Ye Aung, who filed a complaint as a plaintiff.   

The administrator opened a case against Michael Kyaw Myint on charges of sedition under Section 124 (a) of the penal code at Yangon East District Court on January 19. 

An officer from South Oakkalapa Township Police Station also confirmed his arrest. 

The Facebook post written by Michael Kyaw Myint says: “A ceremony to erect a national monument assigning duties by the entire people including monks to the Tatmadaw mainly responsible for safeguarding the constitution to save the country in line with the provisional constitutions”. 

He also wrote other alleged electoral fraud issues in his Facebook post. 

Section 124 (a) of the law prescribes that whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, bring to attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards [the Government established by law for the Union or for the constituent units thereof,] shall be punished with transportation for life or an shorter term, to which fine may be added, or with imprisonment which may extend to three years, to which fine may be added, or with fine.
