Large crowds attend funeral of teenage protester shot dead in Mandalay

The funeral of a 19-year-old Chinese descendant, Kyel Sin (aka) Deng Jia Xi, who died after being shot in the head in the protest on 84th Street in Mandalay on March 3 took place at Yunnan Buddhist Temple on 80th Street on the morning of March 4. 

A large number of local residents including Chinese descendants attended the funeral singing political songs, chanting slogans and moaning and praising the slain teen. 

Her body was to be entombed at the Chinese cemetery in Aye Yeik Nyein Cemetery. 

Mandalay city has seen mass protests joined by people of all races and regions since February. 

On March 3 morning in Mandalay, local people in various columns gathered and staged a peaceful protest in 84th Street (Bogyoke Aung San Street) between 30th and 31 Streets. 

Police used tear gas and stun grenades and fired to disperse the protesters. The protesters dispersed for a while and then gathered again. 

During the resumed protest, the police tried to break it using tear gas and stun grenades and firing live bullets. 

In the police crackdown on the protest, Kyel Sin was shot in the head and died. 

She had been participating in the protest together with Chinese descendants in Mandalay.
