Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) Chairman General N’Ban La departed for China on December 8 to engage in discussions with the Chinese government, according to Kachin Independence Army (KIA) spokesperson Major Naw Bu, who confirmed the news to the BBC.

The Chinese government's Special Envoy for Asian Affairs often facilitates meetings with ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) from northern Myanmar, either in Myanmar or by inviting them to China. However, the details of whom the KIO chairman will meet and the topics to be discussed remain unclear.

“China extended the invitation, and he left from our headquarters on December 8. These meetings occur once a month or every two months, either with the chairman or the vice-chairman attending. This time, it is the chairman himself,” Major Naw Bu explained to the BBC.

Some media outlets have reported that the discussions may take place in Beijing.

Meanwhile, KIA and allied forces have recently launched attacks on security posts in Bhamo, Kachin State, resulting in clashes and causing residents to flee to safer areas. Additionally, KIA forces have attacked border guard units in Kachin Special Region 1, previously under the control of People’s Militia leader Zahkung Ting Ying. They have since taken control of the Pan Wa and Kan Pike Tee regions.

The KIA also plays a significant role in providing military training to People's Defense Force (PDF) groups in upper Sagaing Region. KIA members reportedly cooperate with PDFs in joint operations and coordinate with the National Unity Government (NUG) on military strategies.

In the Kachin Special Region, rare earth mining operations are ongoing, with the extracted minerals exported to China. As KIA currently controls these areas, analysts suggest that discussions with China might address not only border stability but also Chinese investment projects, including rare earth mining activities.
