India will continue cooperation with Myanmar’s election commission, says ambassador

India would continue cooperation with the Union Election Commission of Myanmar and its assistance, said Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Vinay Kumar.  

UEC Chairman U Thein Soe and the Indian ambassador met in Nay Pyi Taw in Nay Pyi Taw on April 25.

The UEC chair said Myanmar and India had been cooperating in electoral processes since the past and India provided its support to Myanmar, which also studied the democratic system and laws of India in implementing its democratic system.

The Indian ambassador talked about the bilateral relations between Myanmar and India as good neighbouring countries, the same history in developing religion, culture and democracy and further cooperation with the UEC.

He also asked about electoral processes and other assistance. The UEC Chairman openly discussed the compiling of voter lists to hold the next election, scrutiny of political parties, preparations to adopt a PR system and cooperation between the two countries in electoral processes.

On April 19 also, UEC chairman U Thein Soe received Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Chen Hai in Nay Pyi Taw.

During the meeting, the Chinese ambassador raised questions on the work plans being carried out in line with the five-point roadmap of the State Administration Council, future work plans and scrutiny of political parties.

U Thein Soe frankly discussed the commission’s activities, amendment of laws and rules to organize the election, compiling of voter lists, inspection of political parties and China-Myanmar bilateral relations.
