Independent candidates representing farmers and workers will stand for general election this year, according to a press conference held at Myanmar Press Freedom Center in Yangon on February 5.

The aim is to protect the rights and interests of workers and farmers and bring their voices and opinions to parliament.

Labor and farmer organizations will select their representatives to run for the upcoming election.

"Government and parliamentary representatives alike have some weaknesses in protecting the rights and interests of workers and farmers. We coordinated matters to choose representatives for labour and farmer unions as well as civil society organizations. Although they are named independent candidates, they will not stand for election in their own interest but in the interest of those organizations," advocate and labour activist U Htay told the media.

Currently, six independent candidates will be chosen. Though decision has yet to be made as to which region or state will be chosen, those candidates will surely compete in Hlinethaya Township largely populated by workers.

In parliament, they will only work in the best interest of workers and farmers, not for political or power gain.
