A health worker was shot and killed in the compound of the District People’s Hospital in Myawady, Kayin State, at about 5:30 pm on October 17.

At about 5:30 pm, two people arrived on a red motorcycle into the hospital compound, Ward No.4. They then approached health worker Ko Soe, sitting under a tree and shot him three times. The staff sustained a serious head injury.

Emergency medical treatment was performed on the victim, but he was reported to have lost his life from a gunshot wound.

Local residents express concern that there are gunshots in the border town of Myawady while there have been frequent motorcycle robberies, lootings and killings.

"In the town, there have been robberies and killings of motorcyclists. Weapons are plentiful on the border. There have been three shootings in which four people lost their lives. We feel unsafe and insecure,” said a resident of Myawady.

In connection with the incident, local police are reportedly investing and searching for the perpetrators and increasing security in the town.
