The Ministry of Health yesterday released an advisory to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses commonly occurring during the winter season.
The advisory highlights that respiratory infections, including influenza viruses, COVID-19, and Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), are more prevalent during this period. These infections can particularly affect children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, often leading to more severe symptoms.
Transmission of these illnesses occurs through droplets from coughing or sneezing, close contact with infected individuals, handshakes, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. Symptoms include coughing, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, difficulty breathing, and, in severe cases, bronchitis or pneumonia.
Preventive measures include wearing a mask if you have symptoms, washing your hands regularly with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, and maintaining social distancing from others.
To minimize the risk of infection, the Ministry advises the following preventive measures include wearing a mask if symptoms are present. Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water or using hand sanitizers, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing and maintaining physical distance from others.
For those planning to travel to countries experiencing a surge in respiratory illnesses, precautions should be taken to avoid exposure. Travelers returning to the country are encouraged to seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms, ensuring early diagnosis and treatment.
The Ministry underscores the importance of early detection and preventive measures to curb the spread of these illnesses during the winter months.
