The first regular session of the third Union Parliament is scheduled to commence on February 5 with the tasks of electing President, forming new government and appointing members of Union level organizations, said T Khun Myat, speaker of the second Union Parliament. 

The speaker disclosed the information during the coordination meeting (1/2021) of the central committee for convening parliamentary sessions and work committees on January 11.

As per Sections 123, 124 Sub-section (b) and 155, speakers of the lower and upper houses of parliament serving for the second parliamentary term must call the first regular sessions for the upcoming third parliamentary term. Therefore, the first sessions of both houses of the third parliament will take place on February 1 and parliamentary representatives have been informed to arrive in Nay Pyi Taw not later than January 23 or 24, the speaker said. 

Likewise, the first regular session of the third Union Parliament is due to begin on February 5. At the sessions of the respective parliaments, there will be such tasks as electing speakers and deputy speakers of both houses, establishing parliamentary affairs committees, electing President and Vice Presidents, forming Union government and appointing members of Union level organizations, T Khun Myat said.

He then called for cooperation and suggestions of the respective work committees to ensure the success of the forthcoming parliamentary sessions as they are crucial for the country and the people.

Upper House Speaker Mann Win Khaing Than also called for inclusive cooperation for successfully holding the first regular parliamentary sessions under the guidelines of Covid-19 prevention and control.

Lower House Deputy Speaker Tun Aung (a) Tun Tun Hein then took part in the discussion inviting suggestions for effective containment of Covid-19.

The meeting was also attended by union ministers and the chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council.
