Sittwe- Sittwe Township court sentenced former Rakhine State chief minister Nyi Pu to two years in prison with hard labour under Section 505 (b) on October 8.
Nyi Pu was charged with four cases including sedition under Penal Code. His defendant lawyers gave final appeal on October 5 and verdict was made on October 8.
“We can say that it is the highest sentence,” said his lawyer Nyein Chan.
He was arrested on February 1. He was former Rakhin State chief minister as well as NLD party central executive committee member. He was charged with sedition under the Penal Code for issuing a statement during February by NLD CEC members.
The verdict was delivered via video conferencing. His lawyer Nyein Chan said that he didn’t have the chance to meet him and so he didn’t know he wants to appeal or not.
“We can talk a little at the court hearing. So, I will ask him whether he wants to appeal or not,” said his lawyer Nyein Chan.
He was charged with three corruption charges in Rakhine State beside Section 505 (b). Special court will be opened in prison to hear these cases, and he will appear in court on October 13, it said.
