Fire destroyed about 50 houses in Mae La refugee camp in the Myanmar-Thailand border on the night of February 9, sources said.

A total of six fire engines from nearby townships came to put out the fire and it finally died down around 12:30 am.

“We still don’t know the cause of the fire yet and it is under investigation. About 200 people are homeless now and we are arranging food and accommodation for them,” said Ko Gyi Mann from Mae Sot.

It is the fourth time of fire break-out at the refugee camp, he said.

It is located in Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province about 30 miles north of Mae Sot. About 100,000 Myanmar citizens are living in nine refugee camps including Mae La, Umpiem and Nu-Poh camps in the Myanmar-Thailand border.

They are sent to their relatives’ homes in the refugee camp and the authorities arrange food for them.
