MANDALAY- Due to torrential rain, a banyan tree measuring about 9 ft in circumference fell on the staff quarter of Myanmar Railways in Sapae Ward, Myitnge Township, Mandalay Region, at night of October 8th leaving a father and child duo dead and injuring another.

Due to the fallen banyan tree, four family members were also trapped between the building and the fallen tree. 

The authorities, together with officials from Myitnge Railways Department as well as fire brigade members and other rescue teams tried extracting the trapped family members. But, father and son amongst the four were killed by fallen tree on the spot, according to police records.

Among the two remaining members, one daughter had no injuries while the mother sustained severe injuries and is now receiving medical treatment at the Mandalay People’s Hospital.

“We had never faced such kind of incident in Myitnge Township. The mother who remained alive was severely injured and we heard that she needed money to continuing receiving medical treatment. So, we plan to provide the cash assistance as much as we can. Moreover, we are also going to provide schooling costs for the daughter to get her through Grade-V through the Ward Administrator,” said a volunteer that was helping out the victims.

The bodies were buried at the Myitnge Cemetery yesterday evening.
