The first ministerial-level meeting between China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam on joint efforts to combat online fraud was held at the Hai Geng Hotel in Kunming, China, on November 14.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Liu Zhongyi, Assistant Minister for Public Security of China, and he delivered a welcoming speech. The heads of delegations from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam also delivered speeches.
Myanmar will step up regional cooperation to combat online fraud, resolutely dismantle fraud networks and criminal gangs, and rescue those trapped in these networks. In his speech, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw, said that special attention will be paid to maintaining the rule of law in the region, that combating online fraud is a common responsibility of the Lancang-Mekong Community, and that the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism is a platform to meet challenges.
The discussion continued with three topics: jointly establishing an international alliance to combat fraudulent crimes using telecommunications and the internet, eliminating and increasing deportation of online fraud sites, and jointly controlling key online fraud sites. Representatives from the participating countries joined in the discussion.
Then, the chairman, Mr. Liu Zhongyi, and the heads of delegations of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam delivered closing remarks.
The meeting was attended by a delegation from Myanmar, led by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Aung Kyaw Kyaw, a Chinese delegation led the Assistant Minister for Public Security, a Cambodian delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Interior, a Lao delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Public Security, a Thai delegation led by the Deputy Police Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, and a Vietnamese delegation led by the Deputy Commander of the Criminal Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security. Representatives from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), INTERPOL’s Singapore Regional Office and the Lancang–Mekong Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Centre (LMLECC) also attended as observers.
