A nationwide census operation focusing on population and housing officially commenced on October 1, 2024, in Mon State. On the first day of the operation, data collection began in Hlaing Ward, as reported by local sources.
The census teams comprise members from the Immigration Department, local ward and village administrations, as well as trained teachers experienced in census-taking. This year’s census features a comprehensive set of 62 questions covering aspects such as population and household details. The data collected by the enumerators will be entered into digital systems, according to local reports.
In Mawlamyine, the capitals of Mon State, there are 505 designated census plots, with an equal number of enumerators assigned to gather information from residents between October 1 and October 15.
In Thaton Township, the census was initiated on the morning of October 1. As of October 2, data collection has progressed in Nanche Ward and Leik-in Ward. The census teams, which include Immigration Department staff, trained teachers, and local administrators, have been seen accompanied by a notable presence of security personnel.
Additionally, the census is being conducted in Belin, Paung, Chaung Zone, Mudon, Thanbyu Zayat, and Kyaikmaraw Townships.
A resident from Kyaikmaraw Township commented, “During the census, we were required to answer 62 questions. The team arrived with tablets that already had some data entered, and it seemed they were verifying the information we provided.” Throughout the data collection process, military forces, police, and militia groups have been deployed to ensure security.
In Yay Township, where martial law is in effect, census data collection also took place on October 2.
