It is better for the country if the army do their job after the army issued a statement on November 2 that they cast doubt on the Union Election Commission (UEC) for free and fair election and the government has responsibility to supervise the actions of the UEC, said Dr Myo Nyunt, spokesperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD).

The response of the NLD’s spokesperson was reported in the Myanmar Times website.

“It is the main thing in politics. It will be better if we do our job. If not, we cannot deal with many problems,” he said to the Myanmar Times.

Although the Daily Eleven contacted Dr Myo Nyunt in the evening of November 3 in relation to the army’s statement, no reply was made.

Under the check and balance system between the union government and the UEC, the incumbent government is required to conduct systematic and correct supervision on the performance of duties by the commission to hold free and fair elections, announced the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services.

The Myanmar Times reported quoting Dr Myo Nyunt that the NLD does not agree with what the army said about the UEC. The UEC is an independent commission and if they are not satisfied with the performance of the commission, they can investigate the performance of the UEC.

“In our view, the UEC is doing its best at the present,” he said.

They are facing disturbances at the present and some people are trying to disrupt the election. it is not only the responsibility of the UEC but also people who create the problems, he said.

Although the army’s statement is not intense, it is needed to be concerned. However government institutions should cooperate with each other to find weaknesses, said Dr Sai Ye Kyaw Swar Myint, Executive Director of the People's Alliance for Credible Elections (PACE).

“The army which is a state institution and another state institution, the UEC, need to find a mechanism to cooperate. In my view, it is not good for politics,” he said.
