At least 500 mice have died in Butalin Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Region, said Dr Zay Lin Maung, regional MP for Butalin Township Constituency No (2).

Regarding the mass deaths of mice, the Regional Health Department has sent samples to the laboratory in Yangon Region.

"A large number  of mice have died in Butalin for about three days. We don't know the cause of death yet. We have sent death samples to the lab and we have not received results. In Maunghtaung Village alone, 364 mice died. Almost every houses found deaths of mice. Some were found to dead in other villages of the township. There were around 500 deaths in total," said the MP.

Dr Zay Lin Maung said no other diseases were found in the dead mice but local people had raised concern over the mass deaths. There were no cases of infection between animals and humans, he added.

Dead mice were found in Maunghtaung, Dantaing and Kyatyogon villages of Butalin Township.
