The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that, following a major earthquake near Kyaukse, there have been up to 220 aftershocks within a little over four months.
At 12:16 p.m. on August 12, an aftershock with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale struck about nine miles northeast of Kyaukse at a depth of 10 kilometers. This was recorded as the 220th aftershock since the powerful quake.
The department said the aftershocks included tremors above magnitude 5 and others above magnitude 4. An earthquake occurred at 12:01:02 a.m. on July 28, centered about one mile south of Maha Aung Myay Township in Mandalay Region at a depth of 33 kilometers.
Additionally, on the morning of July 16, two earthquakes of over magnitude 4 were recorded in Mandalay Region. The first struck at 3:27 a.m., centered about four miles southeast of Pyigyidagun Township at a depth of 10 kilometers. Less than five hours later, at 7:52 a.m., another quake with a magnitude of 4.2 occurred about seven miles south-southeast of Wundwin, also at a depth of 10 kilometers.
