A child wounded as mortar shell explodes in Hlaingbwe Township

A 4-year-old child was wounded when a mortar shell fell and exploded in Shwegun village of Hlaingbwe Township, Kayin State, on the morning of August 20, according to local sources.

An unknown armed group attacked the military base and police station situated in eastern Shwegun village from the western part of the Thanlwin River with a 60 mm mortar around 7:30 am of August 20. Due to the attacks, shells dropped into the compound of the military base, a civilian ward and the site of an old sawmill. Consequently, a 4 years old child was wounded in the head, left breast and left hand, local residents said.

One of the locals from Shwegun village also reported that four of the mortar shells fell onto the military base. However, they didn’t know about any injuries or damage. Another dropped onto the old sawmill. But, no one was hurt.

Currently, the injured child is receiving medical treatment at the Shwegun hospital. 

The embankment of Thanlwin River situated in the western part of Shwegun village is the No.1 Brigade of Thahton District under the KNU controlled region. Moreover, the Shwegun village is the area of Karen National Union’s No.7 Brigade of Hpa-an District.
