On the bridge located on the Yangon-Mawlamyine road between the Moenai neighborhood in Paung town and the Uttata village, a local resident and security personnel discovered 12 handmade large mines placed under the bridge.
According to a local resident, the discovery occurred in the morning of February 3, 2025, at the creek-crossing Bridge (Bridge No. 2/171) located between Paung town's Moenai neighborhood and Uttata village. The handmade mines, connected with wires, were found under the bridge.
The resident continued, "Around 7 AM this morning, military personnel from Paung Township and police officers from the municipal police station were seen blocking the road at the bridge between Moenai neighborhood and Uttata village for a search operation. Later, it was discovered that over 10 large handmade mines were placed under the bridge in the stream, and they are currently being cleared."
While the handmade mines were being cleared, the local resident also mentioned that the Yangon - Mawlamyine road was temporarily closed and re-opened only after the mines were cleared.
The residents further assessed that if the handmade mines had exploded, the bridge would have been destroyed, and the Yangon - Mawlamyine road would have been cut off.
The handmade mines, measuring 19 inches in length and 8 inches in width, were found to be placed in steel containers filled with TNT gun powder, with 12 mines connected by wires across 23 channels under the bridge, according to the security personnel and a close associate.
The local resident added, "The bridge where the mines were found is located on the road heading from Paung town toward Zingyaik town. After passing the 'Welcome to Paung Town' sign, you will reach this bridge. Beyond the bridge, you will arrive at Uttata village, where the palm tree hill is located. The mines were found under the bridge in a well-organized manner."
