A total of 112 dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases happened and two young children died in Kyaikhto Township, Mon State, from May 23 to June 25, according to the Township Health Department.

The department has warned that parents take precautionary measures for their children as DHF cases increase in the township and it is the disease that cannot be underestimated.

“People must cover their water tanks and replace the old water with fresh water two times a week to wipe out mosquito larva. For the lakes, it is necessary put abate medicine into them. For this, contact nearest health departments for the medicine, said Dr Min Thu, leader of a medical team combating mosquito-borne diseases.

He said prevention is the best way when it comes to dengue fever.

“There is no medicine to kill the dengue virus or vaccine. Young children may die of that disease. So, prevention is the best,” he added.

According to the data from the Health Department, in Mon State, there were 3,422 DHF cases and 57 deaths in 2001, 3,028 cases and two deaths in 2013, 5,000 cases and four deaths in 2015.

Myanmar started to experience DHF in 1965 and it spread to Mawlamyine in Mon State only in the 1970s.
