A successful separation surgery has been performed on 2-year-and-5-month-old conjoined twin girls at Yangon Children’s Hospital, according to reports.
The twin sisters, Ma Kyar Nyo Thin and Ma Kyar Nyo Theint, who were joined at the chest, underwent separation surgery on June 11. The operation began at 10:10 a.m. and lasted a total of 9 hours and 35 minutes. As the children’s condition remains stable and satisfactory following the procedure, they are currently being monitored and treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).
The twins were born to a 31-year-old mother from Pakokku as her second pregnancy. They were delivered by cesarean section at the Mandalay Central Women’s Hospital on January 8, 2024. Following their birth, they were cared for at the 550-bed Mandalay Children’s Hospital and were later transferred to the 550-bed Yangon Children’s Hospital (Yankin) at six months of age, where they continued to receive medical care and monitoring.
Throughout their treatment and care, a multidisciplinary team under the Ministry of Health—including hospital directors, pediatric specialists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and retired medical experts from Mandalay and Yangon—continuously monitored the twins and coordinated preparations for the eventual surgery.
In January 2026, the twins were transferred to Yangon Children’s Hospital, where the separation surgery would be conducted, and necessary preparations were made. The operation was successfully carried out on June 11 under the guidance and support of the Ministry of Health and the leadership of Medical Superintendent Dr. Aung Tun Oo from Yangon Children’s Hospital .
The surgical effort involved multiple specialist teams. Surgical Team (1) was led by Professor Dr. Nyo Nyo Win, a pediatric surgeon from Yangon Children’s Hospital, and Professor Dr. Phone Myint, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology at Yangon General Hospital. Surgical Team (2) was led by Professor Dr. Mya Mya Hlaing from the 550-bed Mandalay Children’s Hospital and Professor Dr. Mya Soe, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology at North Okkalapa General Hospital.
Additional support was provided by pediatric specialists from Yangon Children’s Hospital and the 550-bed Yangon Children’s Hospital (Yankin) under the leadership of Professor Dr. Thazin Mon, nursing teams led by Chief Nurse Daw Moe Yu Yu Khine, retired pediatric surgeons, and senior specialists from the University of Medicine 1, Yangon, including Professor Dr. Moe Moe Tin (Surgery), Professor Dr. Win Win Kyaw (Cardiovascular Surgery), and Professor Dr. Sai Aung Nyunt Oo (Hepatobiliary Surgery).
Myanmar has now successfully performed a total of 12 conjoined twin separation surgeries using only domestic medical expertise, including nine procedures at Yangon Children’s Hospital and three at Mandalay Children’s Hospital, without the involvement of foreign specialists.
