Repairs are underway at the Thaton natural gas-fired power plant in Kyarpan Village, Thaton, and the facility is expected to resume operations by August, according to Mon State Electricity, Energy, Industry and Transport Minister U Zeya Oo.

The minister said the plant has one steam turbine and two gas turbines. The steam turbine has already been repaired and reinstalled, while one gas turbine is currently being repaired in China and is expected to return by August. The second gas turbine is expected to arrive by December.

He added that electricity generation can restart once the repaired gas turbine returns, while full operations will resume after the second turbine is installed.

Each gas turbine can generate 40 megawatts of electricity, producing a combined 80 megawatts when both are operational. Together with the steam turbine, the plant will be capable of generating up to 118.9 megawatts at full capacity.

The Thaton power plant project, developed by China Energy Engineering Corporation under an EPC contract, began upgrades in 2016 and was officially opened in April 2019. Major maintenance work is currently being carried out by Yangon Industrial Solutions Co.,Ltd.
