Pakokku onion prices market have increased by approximately Ks 500 per viss in early June due to a decline in supply entering the market, according to local traders.
Until the end of May, Pakokku onion market were selling at around Ks 2,100 per viss. However, prices have climbed to as high as Ks 2,650 per viss at the beginning of June.
Market arrivals currently range between 4,000 and 10,000 viss per day, significantly lower than normal levels. Traders said the reduction in supply is mainly due to transportation difficulties and security concerns along routes connecting Pakokku with major onion-producing areas such as Pauk and Pale townships.
“Supply entering the market is very limited. Onion prices have also increased in other markets, including Myingyan. Prices are rising because Yangon buyers are offering higher rates. Under normal road conditions, market arrivals would reach hundreds of thousands of viss. The main reason for the shortage is the difficulty faced by trucks traveling on these routes,” a Pakokku-based onion trader said.
On June 4, when approximately 10,000 viss of onions entered the market, prices were recorded at Ks 1,500–1,800 per viss for small-sized onions, Ks 1,900–2,200 per viss for medium-sized onions, and Ks 2,300–2,650 per viss for large-sized onions.
