The Tatmadaw has recaptured Tonzang town, which had been temporarily controlled by the CDF, CNA and PDF coalition forces, and has now regained full control of the entire northern region of Chin State, according to sources.

The CDF, CNA and PDF coalition forces temporarily seized control of Tonzang town on May 23, 2024. Since then, the Tatmadaw has been conducting counter-terrorism operations in several townships, villages and areas temporarily occupied by insurgent groups. On April 25, 2026, the Tatmadaw fully regained control of Falam town, which had also been under temporary insurgent control. Following the recapture, administrative mechanisms in Falam resumed normal operations, while regional stability, development and reconstruction activities were carried out.

After securing Falam town, the Tatmadaw prepared further operations to retake areas between Falam and Tiddim that had been temporarily controlled by insurgents, with the objective of reopening the Falam–Thingngin–Tiddim–Tonzang communication route. Military columns launched area clearance operations on April 29, 2026, and reached the Thingngin junction on May 2. Kennedy Hill was recaptured on May 5, and Tiddim town was secured on May 9.

The Tatmadaw then continued preparations in Tiddim town for operations to retake Tonzang. During the offensive, Point-1504 hill was recaptured on May 11, followed by Maung Kin and Twal Mu villages on May 12, Gam Ngain Village on May 14, Lom Zan and Byal Kyin villages on May 16, Tat Zan Village on May 17, and Thung Taung Village together with Point-1985 hill on May 19. By the afternoon of May 20, the Tatmadaw had fully regained control of Tonzang town.

During the phased clearance and recapture operations in and around Tonzang, Tatmadaw troops engaged insurgent groups in six separate clashes, seizing two enemy bodies, five weapons, ammunition and related military equipment.

The Tatmadaw is currently prioritizing the clearance of landmines planted by insurgents to ensure the safe return of displaced local residents to Tonzang town. In cooperation with local ethnic communities, efforts are also underway to restore government administration, reopen schools, and resume healthcare services through hospitals and clinics.

With the complete recapture of Tonzang town, the Tatmadaw has regained full control of the entire northern region of Chin State, including Hakha, Thantlang, Falam, Tiddim, Tonzang and Cikha towns. As a result, local ethnic residents who were temporarily displaced are now able to return to their homes and resume their livelihoods and businesses.
