An outbreak of diarrheal disease has been reported in Kyaikkhami, Thanbyuzayat Township, in Mon State, affecting local residents including fishermen, according to sources.

On the afternoon of April 30, five fishermen from Aung Thukha Ward in Kyaikkhami developed symptoms of diarrhea and were admitted to the Kyaikkhami Public Hospital. Among them, four patients with severe conditions were transferred to the General Public Hospital in Mawlamyine, said a person close to the Township Health Department.

The source added, “In addition, more than 30 people—including family members of the infected fishermen and residents from Aung Thukha Ward—have been sent to Kyaikkhami Public Hospital, where they are being quarantined and monitored.”

Due to the situation, on May 1, a communicable disease prevention team from the State Public Health Department conducted field inspections. The Thanbyuzayat Township Public Health Department has also been carrying out awareness campaigns and preventive measures regarding diarrheal diseases in Kyaikkhami, the source said.

Previously, in the first week of September 2024, diarrheal diseases began spreading among fishing boats and rafts in the waters off Kyaikkhami. The outbreak later spread to the town, affecting fishermen and local residents. At least six people, including a Grade-4 schoolgirl, died, while no fewer than 15 people required medical treatment and more than 80 individuals were placed under quarantine for monitoring.
