The Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw, U Khin Yi, has urged members of parliament to actively listen to the voices of the people and work for public interests in their respective regions during the parliamentary recess.

He made the remarks in his closing speech on the fifth day of the first regular session of the third Pyithu Hluttaw, held today (April 8).

“The Hluttaw will soon be temporarily adjourned. During this recess, representatives, as elected public servants, should make efforts wherever they are to listen to the people’s voices, carry out activities that benefit the public, and prioritize national interests. They should strive to become representatives who can help implement a multi-party democratic system and ensure its successful development with the participation of the public. I would like to emphasize that they must work diligently to truly and continuously represent the people,” U Khin Yi said.

He added that the Hluttaw is an institution that represents the people, and within the parliamentary building, one can see guiding principles such as “The people’s voice is the Hluttaw’s voice,” “The people’s will is the Hluttaw’s will,” and “The Hluttaw fulfills the aspirations of the people.” He noted that the Hluttaw’s responsibilities include electing the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, electing the President and Vice Presidents, representing the people, legislating laws, and maintaining checks and balances among the executive and judicial branches.

U Khin Yi also stated that during the current session, MPs, on behalf of the public  who elected them, have successfully carried out key responsibilities within a short period. These include electing and approving the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the President and Vice Presidents, the Union Government, and Union-level organizations. He expressed appreciation and pride on behalf of the Pyithu Hluttaw to all MPs and the public for these accomplishments.

He further emphasized that MPs should perform their duties with goodwill and sincerity to ensure continuous development and stability in the socio-economic lives of the people. As members of the legislative pillar—one of the key pillars of the State—MPs must strive to carry out their responsibilities in accordance with existing laws, rules, procedures, and directives, and should study legal matters to fulfill their duties effectively.

Finally, he expressed confidence that MPs, as elected representatives, will work with vision and in accordance with the law to address issues both within their constituencies and across the country, and to meet the needs and aspirations of the people they represent.
