Model and actress Thin Zar Wint Kyaw and members of her dance group have been charged under Section 294(a) of the Penal Code, according to sources.

The charges stem from a birthday celebration and film promotion event held on January 15 at the Novotel Hotel in Kamayut Township for the Founder and CEO of Cloud Seven Production & Entertainment. Authorities said the performers carried out sexually suggestive dance performances deemed contrary to Myanmar’s traditional culture. The event was also reportedly held without official permission.

Authorities said legal action was taken after the performers appeared in attire considered inappropriate for public viewing and performed dances described as obscene in nature.

Thin Zar Wint Kyaw had previously been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in 2022 under Section 33(a) of the Electronic Transactions Law and was released from Insein Prison on January 4, 2025.

Under Section 294(a) of the Penal Code, offenders may face up to three months’ imprisonment and a fine.
