Yangon shaken by 3.6-Magnitude earthquake

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck Yangon at around 11:10 pm. on October 17, according to reports.

Residents across many townships said they clearly felt the tremor. Frightened by the shaking of the earthquake, people living in apartment buildings reportedly rushed out to the streets for safety. One resident from Latha Township wrote on social media, “I ran downstairs so fast that I didn’t even have time to put on my slippers.”

According to a statement from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the quake occurred at 11:09:17 pm. Myanmar Standard Time, with its epicenter located about one mile northwest of Mayangone Township, Yangon Region. The earthquake’s coordinates were 16.86°N latitude and 96.15°E longitude, at a depth of 15 kilometers.
