Renowned artist Dr. U Lun Kyaw passed away at the age of 95 on October 2 due to a chronic illness, his family confirmed. He died at 7 a.m., and his funeral was held the same day at Yeway Cemetery.

“This is an irreplaceable loss for the art world. His contributions are many,” said cartoonist U Shwe Minthar.

The Royal Gallery also expressed condolences on social media, noting that Dr. U Lun Kyaw’s works had touched countless people with deep emotions and reflections. Just days earlier, on September 24, the “Living with the Arts 96” exhibition was organized at Artist Life Art Gallery to honor his birthday, showcasing his lifelong dedication to art.

Dr. U Lun Kyaw was born in Yangon on September 24, 1930, and his father died when he was five months old. He studied painting under the guidance of U Ngwe Kaing, U Thet Win, U Chit Maung, and U Thein Han, who are well-known in the Myanmar art world, and graduated from the Institute of Painting in 1954. From 1958 to 1979, he was an instructor at the Yangon Art and Sculpture Training School, and from 1977 to 1979, he was the principal, and from 1960 to 1979, he taught at the Yangon University Art Association. In 1964, he studied painting further in China and was awarded a membership in the New Art Movement, and in 1971, he traveled to East Germany.

In addition, some of his paintings are exhibited in museums in some foreign countries.
