Mandalay-Police in Mandalay Region have arrested members of two robbery gangs involved in motorcycle thefts, including a group that allegedly used a mini Oway vehicle and machetes to rob victims, as well as individuals accused of receiving, altering, and reselling stolen motorcycles.
According to regional police, four suspects aged between 19 and 20 were arrested on June 9 in connection with the robbery of a motorcyclist near the intersection of 61st and 123rd Streets in Pyigyitagon Township on June 8. The suspects allegedly assaulted the victim before stealing his motorcycle.
The four suspects have been charged under Sections 382-/114 of the Penal Code. Further investigations revealed their involvement in additional motorcycle robberies.
Police also arrested two individuals from villages in Sintgaing Township — a workshop operator and a motorcycle broker — who allegedly received stolen motorcycles, altered their appearance, and resold them. Legal action is being taken against them.
In a separate case, authorities arrested three suspects accused of attacking a couple with machetes and stealing their motorcycle while they were returning from Shwe Sar Yan Pagoda on June 2. Investigations found that the same suspects were later involved in the robbery of a woman riding alone in Pyin Oo Lwin on June 9.
The suspects were apprehended at the 16-Mile security checkpoint while returning to Mandalay after the Pyin Oo Lwin robbery. Police investigations subsequently linked them to the earlier robbery near Shwe Sar Yan Pagoda.
A Mandalay Region Police official said investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the gangs' activities. Authorities are also working to recover stolen property and identify additional motorcycles believed to have been sold through illegal channels.
Cases against the suspects have been opened at police stations in Pyin Oo Lwin and Amarapura townships under Sections 382 and 114 of the Penal Code, and further legal proceedings are underway.
