The National Defence and Security Council (NDFC) amended the requirement that a party must contest in half of all constituencies across the nation to be able to stand as a party, to now only needing to contest in a quarter of all constituencies.
The NDFC enacted the Law Amending the Registration of Political Parties Law of the National Defence and Security Council (Law No. 3/2025) on September 21.
The NDFC enacted this law in accordance with Article 427 of the Constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. In this law, Section 12 (a) (1) of the Registration of Political Parties Law has been replaced with: "If it is a party that will organise across the entire Union, failure of the party to compete in one quarter of all constituencies in the Pyithu Hluttaw, the Amyotha Hluttaw, and the Region or State Hluttaw (including ethnic representatives’ constituencies) in the general election."
The original Section 12 (a) (1) of the Registration of Political Parties Law stated: "If it is a party that will organise across the entire Union, failure of the party to compete in half of all constituencies in the Pyithu Hluttaw, the Amyotha Hluttaw, and the Region or State Hluttaw (including ethnic representatives’ constituencies) in the general election." It is understood that if a party violates this provision, it will no longer have the right to continue to exist as a political party.
