Five PDFs and escaped detainee recaptured after armed ambush in Hlaing Tharyar Township

Five members of the People’s Defence Force (PDF) who fled custody after ambushing police officers in Hlaing Tharyar Township, Yangon Region, have been recaptured along with the escaped detainee and their weapons.

On the evening of July 1, 2025, police from Hlaing Tharyar (East) Police Station arrested Ma Zun Pwint Hlaing (30) under Section 50(Nya) of the Anti-Terrorism Act and escorted her for emergency medical treatment related to kidney disease. While returning from the Ocean Center in Hlaing Tharyar (East) Township after purchasing medicine, the police escort was ambushed near a parking lot by PDFs armed with small weapons. The attackers opened fire, injuring several officers and taking Ma Zun Pwint Hlaing with them.

Following the incident, a joint search operation was launched. On the morning of July 2, authorities successfully apprehended the escapees at two locations: the intersection of Road 6 in Phayagone Village, Thanlyin Township, and the Sitpin Kwin bus stop along the Thanlyin-Thonekhwa Road.

The arrested individuals are: Chit Zin Lin (a.k.a. Saw Ae Htoo, 38), son of U Sein Min, from Taung Waing Village, Hpa-an Township,  Thiha Thu (23), son of U Bo Bo Thu, from Ward 13, Hlaing Tharyar (West), Thukha Pyaesone (20), son of U Nay Htun, from Thamin Ingone Village, Kyauktakha Township, Thura Win (35), son of U Than Zaw, from Yeik Thar Ward, Hlegu Township, Aung San Moe (a.k.a. Paungmont, 22), son of U Moe Thee, from Myothit Ward, Monywa Township, Ma Zun Pwint Hlaing (30), the original detainee.

Authorities seized two pistols, 43 rounds of ammunition, three magazines, and four hand grenades during the arrests. The Myanmar Police Force stated that legal action is being taken against all six individuals under the law.
