The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that due to the intensification of monsoon winds in the Bay of Bengal, some areas across states and regions may experience heavy, sporadic rainfall.
According to the announcement, the strengthening of monsoon winds in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, along with the influence of easterly wind waves, will likely cause scattered to widespread thundershowers in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon Region, Mandalay Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Kayah State, Karen State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and Shan State from the evening of June 12 to June 18. Some areas may experience localized heavy rainfall.
Additionally, occasional squalls with strong winds are expected in the delta region, the Gulf of Mottama, along the Mon-Tanintharyi coastline, and offshore areas. During these storms, surface winds may reach speeds of 30 to 35 miles per hour, with wave heights ranging from 9 to 11 feet in the delta, the Gulf of Mottama, coastal areas, and offshore waters.
Due to the expected heavy rainfall, strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, flash floods, and landslides may occur. Residents living near highland areas are advised to be cautious of landslides, while those near small rivers and streams should remain alert for potential flooding and water overflow. The department also warned inland waterway and air travelers to take necessary precautions.
The meteorological department predicts that a low-pressure system may form over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal during this period. The southwest monsoon is also expected to strengthen over these areas.
Above-average rainfall is expected in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Kayah State, Karen State, Mon State, and southern Shan State. Near-average rainfall is forecast for Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Chin State, Rakhine State, and northern/eastern Shan State.
Seven to nine days of thundershowers are expected in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon Region, Bago Region, Magway Region, upper Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kachin State, Karen State, Chin State, Mon State, Rakhine State, and northern/southern Shan State.
