The Ministry of Health announced that six new COVID-19 cases were detected in Yangon Region.
Between May 18 and 25, a total of 2,754 samples were tested, confirming six new COVID-19 cases.
According to the ministry's statement, the six cases were found in the following townships: two in Dagon, one in Insein, one in Thaketa, one in Kawhmu, and one in Dagon Myothit (East).
The infection rate was 0.22%, with no severe cases, patients requiring intensive care, or deaths due to COVID-19.
The currently detected variants are sub-lineages that are spreading globally but are not severe. The available vaccines remain effective against them. The Ministry of Health is conducting disease surveillance at airports, ports, and border gates, testing suspected cases, monitoring genetic mutations, and administering vaccines.
The ministry also stated that vaccines capable of protecting against the highly transmissible Omicron sub-variant JN.1 and subsequent mutated strains of COVID-19 will be provided.
In May, under the GAVI-supported COVID-19 Vaccination Program, Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine JN.1 will be administered to protect against the JN.1 sub-variant and other emerging mutations.
As COVID-19 variants continue to evolve, next-generation vaccines targeting these mutations are also being developed. The Ministry of Health has administered the Pfizer X.B.B.1.5 vaccine to 1,125,291 adults (aged 18 and above) who had not yet received a dose between January and April, including 14,775 pregnant women, as well as 2,286,726 individuals who were due for booster shots (six months to a year after their last dose).
Additionally, Myanmar has fully vaccinated over 36.36 million people aged five and above using eight types of COVID-19 vaccines, while administering 21.25 million booster doses, according to the Ministry of Health.
