Earthquakes shake Mandalay Region, minor tremors reported throughout the day

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has reported that an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale struck near Mandalay on April 18.

The tremor occurred around 8:00 pm, with its epicenter located approximately 3 miles east-northeast of Mandalay, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in Mandalay felt the tremor strongly, with one local saying, “The earthquake was quite intense since it struck within the city. It felt like a sudden jolt — really frightening.”

Earlier the same day, at 3:57 am, a 3.9 magnitude quake hit about 2 miles west-northwest of Mandalay, at a depth of 11 kilometers. Later, at 9:00 am, another earthquake registering 3.5 magnitudes was recorded 30 miles southeast of Pyin Oo Lwin, also at a depth of 11 kilometers.

Additional tremors followed in the afternoon and evening. At 4:10 pm, a 3.1 magnitude quake was recorded 1 mile northwest of Yamethin, and at 7:09 pm, another quake measuring 3.3 struck 9 miles northwest of Tatkon, at a depth of 14 kilometers.

According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, a total of 145 aftershocks were recorded following the initial major quake that occurred on the Myanmar New Year Day (April 17).
