The strongest earthquake in more than 100 years has been followed by 21 aftershocks, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) said.

A series of aftershocks followed a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale at around 12:55 pm on March 28.

The number of aftershocks was recorded as of 9:18 pm on March 29.

The DMH warned that there is a possibility of more aftershocks after the strong earthquakes.

“While we were doing rescue work, we stopped and stayed for a while because the aftershock hit. It was not very strong. We are also monitoring the aftershocks while we are doing rescue work,” said an official from a charity organization traveling from Yangon to Mandalay to help.

Additionally, many people in Mandalay and Sagaing slept on the streets on the night of March 28 due to fears of aftershocks.
