The Yangon Region Transport Committee (YRTC) has announced a zero-tolerance policy for reckless driving among Yangon Bus Service (YBS) drivers, including overtaking other buses, making sudden U-turns, running red lights, and exceeding speed limits.

According to YRTC Vice Chairman U Chit Ko Ko, many YBS drivers engage in reckless driving due to intense competition for passengers. He noted that disputes often arise when drivers are unable to overtake, leading to conflicts among drivers and even with passengers. In response, YRTC has pledged to enforce strict measures against such violations.

To ensure safety and compliance, YRTC requires all YBS drivers to complete a certified training program and pass a drug-free screening before receiving their driving permits. The committee also monitors bus operations through advanced telematics systems and CCTV footage from the Traffic Control Center to gather evidence and take necessary actions.

Additionally, YRTC is cracking down on bus operators that disable the POS card payment system, which ensures that drivers receive fair wages from passenger fares. U Chit Ko Ko emphasized the importance of providing safe and reliable service to passengers while ensuring that drivers adhere to regulations.

Currently, over 4,000 YBS drivers operate more than 100 bus lines, transporting approximately 1.5 million passengers daily across Yangon Region.
