The State Administration Council (SAC) has extended the state of emergency for an additional six months.
The National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) meeting (1/2025) of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was held today (January 31) at 10 am at the meeting hall of the State Administration Council Chairman’s Office in Nay Pyi Taw.
The meeting was attended by the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw U T Khun Myat, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services, Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services (Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Union Minister for Defence, Gen. Maung Maung Aye, Union Minister for Home Affairs, Lt. Gen. Yar Pyae, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, U Than Swe, Union Minister for Border Affairs, Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung, and specially invited Secretary of the SAC, Lt. Gen. Aung Lin Dway, and Joint Secretary, Lt. Gen. Ye Win Oo.
In the meeting, the Acting President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services explained the work carried out by the State Administration Council during the 6-month period since it took over the responsibilities of the State and the needs to continue.
Then, the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services presented the defence and security situation of the State, the conditions on the stability and development of the country since the SAC took over the responsibilities of the State, the implementation of the two political objectives, namely, strengthening a genuine and disciplined multi-party democracy and building a Union based on democracy and federalism, the efforts being made to increase the production of agricultural and livestock products, the efforts being made to promote the education sector to accelerate the development rate of the State, the efforts being made to promote the health sector as education can be obtained from health and social and economic activities can be carried out, the assistance provided by the State for the rehabilitation of areas affected by natural disasters, the efforts made by the SAC to end the armed conflicts that have been taking place in the country since it took office, the efforts made to build a federal system based on a strong multi-party democracy and democratic principles, the preparations for holding a free and fair multi-party democratic general election, and the activities carried out to conduct a population and household census to obtain valid and accurate voter lists during the election. He said it was noted that there is still work to be done to successfully hold the general election that we all aim for. He made a request to extend the term of office for another 6 months in order to continue to work without losing momentum in order to ensure that a free and fair general election is held.
Then, upon the presentation of the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services, the members of the National Defence and Security Council, the special invitees deliberated and discussed the matter, and all members of the National Defence and Security Council, including the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services, unanimously decided to extend the period of the state of emergency for another 6 months in accordance with Article 425 of the 2008 Constitution, and after that, the National Defence and Security Council Meeting was adjourned.
